The U.S. House voted 219 to 211 to terminate President Donald Trump’s use of emergency authorities to impose sweeping tariffs on imports from Canada, with bipartisan support. Rep. Rick Larsen, D Wash., said the measure would provide immediate relief to families and businesses in Northwest Washington.

Larsen released a statement after voting in favor of the resolution, which aims to repeal tariffs the administration imposed under emergency powers.

“The people I represent need immediate relief from President Trump’s stupid tariffs and high prices. That is why I helped lead the effort to force a vote on repealing the President’s tariffs on Canada.

“The President’s tariffs have destroyed local businesses and driven up costs for families in Whatcom County, Skagit County and all over Northwest Washington. The average Washington family paid $2,008 more for basic living expenses in 2025 than in 2024.

“The Administration should be working with Canada to reduce barriers between our two economies, create jobs and lower prices. It’s not complicated: trade good, tariffs bad.

“My colleagues in the Senate have already voted twice to end tariffs on Canada, and I urge them now to take up this legislation and send it to the President’s desk. I will keep fighting to bring down costs in Washington state and make the U.S.-Canada relationship boring again.”

Larsen represents Washington’s 2nd Congressional District, which includes Whatcom and Skagit counties. Larsen is a member of the New Democrat Coalition Trade and Tariffs Task Force and has been a leader in opposing the Trump administration’s tariffs.
