Seattle Mayor Bruce Harrell is inviting residents to help shape the future of one of the city’s most historic neighborhoods by applying for open seats on the Pioneer Square Preservation Board. The board currently seeks applicants for five positions: Property Owner, Retail Owner, Attorney, Human Services, and At-Large.

Community members with a background or interest in historic preservation, urban development, or a strong familiarity with Pioneer Square are encouraged to apply. The board reviews proposed changes to buildings and public spaces within the International Special Review District, offering recommendations to the Seattle Department of Neighborhoods.

โ€œThe work of the Preservation Board is critical to maintaining the architectural character, cultural heritage, and social diversity of Pioneer Square,โ€ the cityโ€™s announcement stated. โ€œThrough historic preservation, the board helps enhance the districtโ€™s economic vitality.โ€

The ten-member board reviews a wide range of proposals, including facade alterations, signage, new construction, street improvements, and changes in use. Board meetings take place on the first and third Wednesday of each month at 9:00 a.m., with hybrid options available for both virtual and in-person participation. Members may also be asked to serve on an additional committee that meets twice monthly.

Service on the board is voluntary and requires a commitment of approximately three to six hours per month. Appointments are made by the mayor and confirmed by the City Council. Members serve without compensation.
