The Alliance for Education has named Roxanne Christian as its new president, marking a strategic shift toward deeper community partnerships and systemic equity in Seattle’s public schools. The appointment follows a national search led by the Seattle Metropolitan Chamber of Commerce and executive search firm NextDeavor.
Christian, who officially stepped into the role this month, brings over 20 years of experience in public education and community engagement. The selection positions the Alliance to build on recent progress while accelerating efforts to close opportunity gaps across the district.
“My commitment to this work is deeply personal. I know what it feels like to navigate barriers that education can and should help remove,” said Christian. “I was supported by teachers, mentors, family and neighbors who saw potential in me when life was unpredictable, and that shaped who I am as a leader today.”
Christian previously served as the Alliance’s chief advancement officer, where she led strategy across fundraising, communications, and stakeholder engagement. During the COVID-19 pandemic, Christian played a central role in raising $3 million to support students with meals, laptops, and learning resources. Christian also led a successful campaign for the Office of African American Male Achievement, securing $4 million in philanthropic support.
A University of Washington alum with degrees in sociology and educational leadership, Christian has built a career at the intersection of education, policy, and community impact. Christian’s leadership has consistently emphasized racial equity, institutional accountability, and student-centered change.
“Leading the Alliance isn’t just a professional milestone, it’s a full-circle moment,” said Christian. “My focus moving forward is on creating stability, clarity and opportunity so every student in Seattle Public Schools feels seen, supported and prepared for whatever path they choose.”
The Alliance for Education has served as a key nonprofit partner to Seattle Public Schools for more than three decades, helping align private investment with public priorities. Under Christian’s leadership, the organization is expected to sharpen its focus on students furthest from opportunity and increase coordination with district, city, and nonprofit partners.
Fred Podesta, acting superintendent of Seattle Public Schools, highlighted the significance of Christian’s appointment for district alignment and student success.
“Roxanne’s deep understanding of both systems and relationships will strengthen that alignment and help ensure that every investment of time, talent and resources directly benefits Seattle students,” said Podesta.
Michelle Merriweather, president and CEO of the Urban League of Metropolitan Seattle, described Christian’s leadership as both timely and necessary.
“Roxanne’s leadership reflects the courage and commitment our community needs right now,” said Merriweather. “She understands that advancing educational justice isn’t just about programs, it’s about transforming systems.”
Christian has emphasized that the Alliance will continue to act as a convener and catalyst, working alongside schools, families, and community organizations to create long-term, sustainable change. Future plans include deepening engagement with families, supporting culturally responsive education, and prioritizing outcomes for historically underserved students.
