Summary:

New tolling rules for the State Route 167 express toll lanes between Renton and Puyallup will take effect on October 20th, introducing stricter pass requirements, expanded payment options, and a new destination-based pricing system. Carpoolers must have a Good To Go! account and a Flex Pass set to HOV mode, with at least two occupants in the vehicle, including the driver, to continue using the express toll lanes for free. Motorcyclists will also be required to have a Good To Go! account and a motorcycle pass to qualify for toll-free travel.

New tolling rules for the State Route 167 express toll lanes between Renton and Puyallup will go into effect at 5 a.m. Monday, Oct. 20, introducing stricter pass requirements, expanded payment options, and a new destination-based pricing system.

To continue using the express toll lanes for free, carpoolers must now have a Good To Go! account and a Flex Pass set to HOV mode, with at least two occupants in the vehicle, including the driver. Motorcyclists will also be required to have a Good To Go! account and a motorcycle pass to qualify for toll-free travel.

The Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) said the changes aim to create a more consistent and predictable experience for drivers across the region, aligning SR 167 tolling operations with those already in place on Interstate 405.

The new rules will not apply in the ongoing construction zone near the SR 167 bridge over Third Avenue Southwest, where workers are repairing the structure. As a result, the northbound SR 167 HOV lane between Sumner and Pacific will remain untolled until the bridge repairs are complete. This section was initially planned for conversion to an express toll lane as part of the system upgrade.

Alongside the rule changes, WSDOT is launching Pay By Mail, which will allow drivers without a Good To Go! account to use the express lanes. However, these drivers will be charged a higher tollโ€”$2 more per tripโ€”regardless of how many passengers are in the vehicle. Drivers with an account will pay lower rates and avoid mailed bills. Non-tolled general-purpose lanes will remain available for all drivers.

Toll rates for account holders will still range from $1 to $15, based on real-time traffic conditions. Under the new destination pricing model, drivers will pay based on where they enter and exit the express toll lanes. Updated signage will display toll rates for three upcoming exits, and the price shown at the time of lane entry will be locked in for the selected exit.

New lane striping will also affect how drivers access the express toll lanes. Dashed lines indicate legal entry and exit points, while double striped lines mean itโ€™s illegal to crossโ€”mirroring I-405 lane rules.

To prepare for the changes, WSDOT is encouraging all drivers to sign up for a Good To Go! account. The program is free, and drivers can receive a complimentary Flex Pass or motorcycle pass while supplies last. Promo codes for the free passes are available at GoodToGo167.com.
