Lakeside delivered a dominant performance against Lincoln, shutting out the Lynx 24-0 with a relentless defense, opportunistic offense and disciplined execution. The Lions capitalized on Lincolnโ€™s miscues while generating big plays of their own, as they bounced back from a season-opening loss to Shorecrest.

The game opened with Lincoln receiving the kickoff and appearing to set the tone with a 43-yard return. But the play was called back due to a holding penalty on Lakeside, setting the ball back at the 20-yard line. Lincolnโ€™s Matteus Alin opened the drive with two short runs to set up third-and-short, and quarterback Olaf Barradas connected on a pass to move the chains. That momentum was quickly halted by Lakesideโ€™s defense. Kurt Esteban-Mejia recorded a powerful sack, which was followed by another sack by Lakesideโ€™s defense, forcing Lincoln to punt.

Lakesideโ€™s first offensive possession mirrored Lincolnโ€™s. Two short runs and an incomplete pass led to a three-and-out. Still, the Lionsโ€™ defense stayed aggressive, with Cutler Schultz recording Lakesideโ€™s third sack of the day.

Lakeside tried to gain some ground with a reception by Evan Camps, but a penalty pushed them back 10 yards. Despite the setback, back-to-back completions helped move the chains, and an offsides penalty on Lincoln gifted Lakeside another first down. Mixing in short passes and effective runs, Lakeside found rhythm, steadily advancing downfield. As the first quarter closed, the Lions picked up another first down with just 11 seconds on the clock.

The second quarter opened with another offsides penalty on Lincoln, which pushed Lakeside into scoring position at the 18-yard line. Lakeside capitalized with a quick pass to the 6-yard line. Lincolnโ€™s defense responded, with Raffi Whaley making a stop behind the line of scrimmage. But it wasnโ€™t enough to stop Lakesideโ€™s drive, as Andrew Lane powered through Lincolnโ€™s defense for the first touchdown of the game. Lakeside kicker Aidan Streidl converted the extra point, giving the Lions a 7-0 lead.

Lincolnโ€™s struggles continued on the following kickoff when the returner mishandled the ball, resulting in a fumble that was recovered by Lakeside at Lincolnโ€™s 10-yard line. Despite the favorable field position, the Lions couldnโ€™t capitalize fully. An incomplete pass, a tackle for loss and another incompletion forced them to settle for a field goal. Streidlโ€™s field-goal attempt was good, pushing Lakesideโ€™s lead to 10-0.

On the next Lincoln possession, a second fumble gave the ball right back to Lakeside, which recovered at Lincolnโ€™s 31-yard line. The turnover failed to translate into points this time, as Streidlโ€™s next field-goal attempt came up short.

However, Lakesideโ€™s defense continued to cause problems for the Lynx as they forced another punt, following a three-and-out.

Lakeside mounted another promising drive, but the drive stalled as quarterback Connor Ward was sacked, as Lincolnโ€™s defense went on to force a turnover on downs.

After the turnover, Lincolnโ€™s offense started to come alive, with Sam Whitney and Avery Jones picking up yards and first downs. However, three consecutive incomplete passes from Ben Ward halted the drive and led to a turnover on downs, as the Lynx went into halftime trailing 10-0.

The two teams traded possessions to open the second half as both offenses struggled to gain some momentum.

Lakeside responded with a steady offensive drive. Jai Penalver and Anub Zekaryas delivered key runs, moving the ball to the 23-yard line. On first-and-10, Penalver broke free and dashed into the end zone for another touchdown. Streidl converted the point-after attempt, extending the lead to 17-0.

Lincoln showed some spark with back-to-back completions from Whitney and a 15-yard facemask penalty on Lakeside. Alin then added a 15-yard run, exciting the sideline. But penalties plagued the drive โ€” a holding call on Lincoln and pass interference on Lakeside slowed the pace. Unable to capitalize, Lincoln punted again on fourth down. Penalver ended the third quarter with a 5-yard run, and the Lions remained in control.

During the fourth quarter, Lakeside started pushing downfield. Facing second-and-11 on the 44-yard line, Ward connected with Zekaryas, who sprinted 56 yards to the end zone for a touchdown. With Streidlโ€™s extra point, the Lions took a commanding 24-0 lead.

Lincoln continued to fight. Landon Jones and Ben Ward connected on several passes, working to move the ball. But on fourth-and-10, Ward was sacked by Lakesideโ€™s Mekai Hancock for a loss of nine, turning the ball over again.

Lakeside used clock management to their advantage on the next drive, with Alex Andreasson and Aziel Lopez-Vilchez picking up yards. On third-and-3 at the 38-yard line, a Lincoln false start handed Lakeside five more yards and a new set of downs. The Lions couldnโ€™t add more points, eventually punting after a few runs with no gain.

With 1:45 remaining, Lincoln had one last chance, but Nicky Theodore fumbled and Evan Camps recovered, effectively ending the game. Lakeside kneeled the ball to run out the clock and close out a commanding 24-0 victory.

After the game, Lakesideโ€™s head coach Mike Lengel was excited about the way his team executed and performed.

โ€œI am super proud, and super thankful for Lincoln for a great game, they are a great team,โ€ said Lengel. โ€œI am obviously super proud of Lakeside, because we are short-handed. We got a lot fewer numbers than teams, but our players still know how to fight thatโ€™s for sure.โ€
