The colors, rhythms, and flavors of Latin America will fill Seattle Center as Sea Mar Fiestas Patrias returns to the Seattle Center on Saturday, Sept. 13, and Sunday, Sept. 14, with two days of live music, dance, food, and community celebration. The free, family-oriented festival is part of the Seattle Center Festál cultural series.
Sea Mar Fiestas Patrias honors the independence of multiple Latin American nations, many of which mark their Independence Day in September. The event celebrates history while uplifting new generations of Latinos who now call the United States home. This year’s theme, “Nuestra Voz, Nuestra Fuerza” — “Our Voice, Our Strength” — highlights the power of cultural pride and unity.
“Fiestas Patrias is a special event that celebrates the Latino/a/x community and its contributions the community has provided to the larger population,” said Angelica Barajas, a Sea Mar Fiestas Patrias organizer. “These festivities serve as a powerful reminder of the resilience and spirit of the Latino/a/x people. From the echoes of the Grito de Dolores to the colorful parades that fill the streets, Fiestas Patrias embodies a deep sense of pride and unity among Latino/a/x.”
The celebration traces its roots back more than 25 years, when Sea Mar hosted its first Fiestas Patrias in Seattle’s South Park neighborhood. In 2010, the festival expanded to Seattle Center as part of Festál. The weekend begins with the annual parade in South Park, followed by two full days of music, dance, food, art, children’s activities, and a free health fair.
Festivalgoers can enjoy performances by Monamor, Bailadores de Bronce, Mariachi Guadalajara de Seattle, Banda Tamborazo La Pachanga, La Sonora Dinamita, Los Rebeldes de la Cueca from Chile, Caña Dulce from Costa Rica, Latino Twist, Los Reales del Norte, SurLlajta Música Andina, and many others. Dance and fitness workshops in the Armory will include Zumba®, Caribbean and folklórico dance, hula, and classes for children and families.
Beyond entertainment, the festival offers cultural and community activities, including the Viva Art Exhibit, health screenings, wellness resources, and children’s programming. Food vendors will serve authentic Latin American cuisine throughout the weekend.
Fiestas Patrias commemorates independence from Spain and showcases the national pride and cultures of Mexico, Costa Rica, Chile, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, and the United States. The celebration also coincides with National Hispanic Heritage Month, observed from mid-September to mid-October.
Sea Mar Fiestas Patrias is one of 25 annual cultural festivals produced by Seattle Center Festál in partnership with community organizations and supported by the City of Seattle, the Seattle Center Foundation, and 4Culture.
